When I’m working with a client to organize their space, I like to go over all of the different options available when it comes to accessories and products. Everyone has different needs, and the organizers that work for you might not be the organizers that work for someone else. With that being said, there are some accessories that I recommend for most reach-in closets.
These are the powerhouse closet accessories I think the majority of closet owners should consider adding to their smaller storage spaces:
Let’s get started on exploring how these accessories can help you make the most of your reach-in closet system.
Shoe organizers are essential in small closets because they allow you to store shoes off of the floor. The type of organizers you choose will vary based on how many pairs of shoes you have and how you’re using the other space in your closet system.
Keeping footwear off of the floor minimizes damage caused by stepping on your shoes. It can also prevent twisted ankles and other injuries. My recommendation is to ensure you have plenty of space for the shoes you have now along with some additional space for future shoes you will purchase. Of course, I also recommend periodically purging footwear you’re not using.
If you’re looking for a real game-changer in terms of how much clothing you can store, double-hung rods are it. They effectively double the amount of space available by adding a second rod about three feet below the first. This trick will accommodate separates easily; hang your tops on the top rod and your skirts and pants on the bottom rod.
If you’re hanging longer items, such as dresses, suits, or pants that you prefer to hang by their cuffs, there’s still a solution that can use double-hung rods – instead of installing two long rods all the way across the closet space, my team can leave one section of the closet with just one rod and nothing underneath. We can separate the two hanging sections with drawers or shelves to add even more storage potential.
Speaking of drawers, when you have a small closet, dividers in those drawers can make a big difference. Instead of having a single large drawer, a divided drawer will include compartments for different types of items.
When you’re dealing with a reach-in closet, you have to maximize the space available. Rather than dedicate a full drawer to items, like socks or scarves, you can use dividers to make each drawer into a multipurpose storage solution. Versatility is key when you have a small space to work with.
Hooks are a great option for smaller closets because they make good use of the wall space without impinging on the general footprint of the closet. Hooks can be placed along the walls to hold scarves, jewelry, handbags, belts, and more.
You might also consider putting them under shelves or on the back of a swing-out closet door. This option really helps you to make the most of every inch of space available.
Finally, while not strictly a closet accessory, upgrading the lighting in your small closet will give you much more visibility, which makes the space more usable. When you can see into the dark corners of the closet, you’ll be more able to use spaces that might have seemed difficult to access.
Some options for lighting in the closet include LED strips, touch lights, a standing floor lamp, or even a table lamp placed on a shelf. Apartment Therapy has a list of affordable and easy-to-install (read: no wiring!) lights for your closet to consider.
Making the most of a small reach-in closet can seem overwhelming when you don’t have the right tools. If you aren’t sure which accessories would be best for your custom closet system, contact my team, and we’ll send a designer out to you at no cost for a consultation. You’ll be able to work with your designer to create a plan to maximize the space available for better organization overall.
